Getting Ice Cream Social at Shrewsbury School

The beginning of a school year is an exciting time in a child’s scholastic life, what with introducing new and old friends, teachers, books and schedules.

So, why not celebrate it with ice cream?

That’s what Superintendent MacConnell of Shrewsbury Borough School thought when he and his wife arranged the first annual Shrewsbury Borough School Ice Cream Social. The event was held on Tuesday, Aug. 30 from 4 to 5 p.m. Both staff and parent volunteers were in attendance to help.

Currently, the Shrewsbury Borough School serves kindergarten through eighth grade. All ages were invited to attend the social. With a parking lot filled with young students and their families, Superintendent MacConnell and his staff set out tables with several stations students could visit.

The first table held ice cream, with MacConnell himself helping to serve the students, followed by a table with dessert toppings. The next two tables were used for the new school year’s paperwork, including classroom assignments.

The staff of Shrewsbury Borough School hopes this event will help the children adjust to the new school year in a positive way, and get families involved in the new curriculum.

Also bringing old and new friends together, this ice cream social was a fun way for MacConnell and his staff to hand out student schedules and class assignments while meeting new students and parents. While the homeroom assignments were available at the social, they were also mailed, making attendance not mandatory. Despite this, the event was filled with students and parents having fun and enjoying their frozen treats.

Based on the success of the event, MacConnell is hoping to do this in future years to come, making it an annual event.
