New Nonsurgical Fibroid Treatment Eases Symptoms

Fibroids can cause debilitating symptoms like heavy, painful periods and pelvic pressure. While treatment options have traditionally ranged from medication to surgery, HMH Riverview Medical Center now offers a new, nonsurgical fibroid treatment option called Sonata®.
We spoke with Susan Pacana, M.D., and Jocelyn Carlo, M.D., OB-GYNs and gynecologic surgeons at Hackensack Meridian Medical Group. They explain that Sonata is an outpatient procedure done under anesthesia that uses radiofrequency energy to heat and destroy fibroids, causing them to shrink over a few months. “Everything is done vaginally, so there are no incisions,” says Dr. Pacana.
