The Brilliance of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
Double CD/DVD Memories In Rock II Out April 6
“I just got [Rainbow] back together because I wanted to have a blast on the strat." So says guitar legend Ritchie Blackmore says on the DVD portion of the band’s new double CD, “Memories in Rock II,” out April 6. Well, Ritchie, I’m glad you decided to revisit your electric roots because I’ve been having a blast listening to this superb live album! In addition to a blazing concert, the set also features the first new Rainbow music in more than two decades.
“Memories in Rock II” showcases Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow live during a run of British shows last summer. It’s the perfect companion piece to the initial “Memories of Rock,” which featured the band’s 2016 German shows after Blackmore initially resurrected the group.
On “Memories in Rock II” we’re treated to a great performance that sees Blackmore firing on all cylinders on songs that span the Ronnie James Dio, Graham Bonnet and Joe Lynn Turner eras. He lays down riff after legendary riff, from epics like “Stargazer” and “Catch the Rainbow” to rockers “Spotlight Kid” and “All Night Long” to all-time favorites “Man on the Silver Mountain” and “Long Live Rock 'n’ Roll.”

The songs sound current and relevant, remarkable given that some are more than 40 years old. Of course there’s also a fair share of Deep Purple material represented as well. The bluesy “Mistreated” stands out for its juxtaposition of Blackmore’s tasteful restraint and fiery attack. There’s also very spirited versions of “Smoke on the Water” and “Child In Time.”
The disc’s setlist features several special treats not included on the original “Memories of Rock.” These include the majestic “Temple of the King”; a tribute to the late, great Jon Lord on a reworking of the Blackmore’s Night tune, “Carry On Jon;” and the big one: the first new Rainbow music in 23 years. “Waiting For A Sign” features a bluesy, infectious riff and tasteful soloing, and commanding vocals by singer Ronnie Romero The DVD portion of the set includes a dynamic new 2017 studio version of “I Surrender.”

Romero’s powerful pipes, poise, diverse range and confident stage presence give Rainbow the essential frontman it needs. He especially shines on tracks like “Stargazer” and “Child of Time,” his soaring vocals showing he’s more than up to the task of mastering the classics. But Romero is no Dio or Ian Gillan clone. He has a convincing style all his own that makes his performance all the more impressive.
Keyboards are also an important part of Rainbow and Purple. Here, veteran keyboardist Jens Johansson does a fantastic job of providing the atmospherics and organ sounds that complement Blackmore’s guitar work throughout the show. The stellar band also includes bassist Bob Nouveau, drummer David Keith, and backing vocalists Candice Night and Lady Lynn (also of Blackmore’s Night).
The DVD portion of the package includes 80 minutes of revealing and insightful interviews with band and crew members. These include a 30-minute chat with the usually reticent Blackmore, who discusses how this latest version of Rainbow came about, his thoughts on playing again with Deep Purple and the musician he would most like to perform with.
Could we see a new Rainbow album, or maybe even some American shows in the future? We sure hope so. But for now, pick up “Memories in Rock II” and experience Rainbow and Ritchie Blackmore’s brilliance anew.
