Gay Pride Flag To Be Flown At Ridgewood High School
The school was the first in New Jersey to fly a gay pride flag when it hoisted one in June for Pride Month.

RIDGEWOOD, NJ — A rainbow pride flag will be flown at the high school for the second consecutive year.
The rainbow-colored flag will be hoisted June 5 at 3:15 p.m. at a ceremony commemorating LGBT Pride Month.
The Ridgewood High School Gay-Straight Alliance, a student-led group, has led several initiatives at the school in support of the gay community on campus, including the pride flag raising. They headed up the local effort of the Day of Silence, a national campaign designed to bring awareness to the silencing effects of anti-LGBTQ name-calling, bullying, and harassment.

The alliance will sell pride flags will be sold at the high school throughout June. Proceeds will be donated to the New Jersey Pride Center. The alliance raised $400 for the center last year.
Last year, Ridgewood was the first high school in New Jersey to raise a pride flag.

There was a lot of discussion last year about a pride flag being raised at Van Neste Square. The issue created controversy after council members seemed to be against flying the flag on the municipal flagpole at Village Hall.
