Glen Rock Police Urge Caution After Kids Struck By Vehicles

A 13-year-old boy was hit just 150 feet from a crosswalk where a school crossing guard was on duty, police said.

GLEN ROCK, N.J. — Police urge residents use crosswalks and avoid motor vehicle crashes like the ones last week where two children were injured crossing the street in places they should not have been.

A 13-year-old boy was struck when he tried crossing Hamilton Avenue. He was hit only 150 feet from a crosswalk where a school crossing guard was on duty.

"That crossing guard would have assisted that boy. He did not have to cross the street there," said Police Chief Dean Ackermann.

No summonses were issued in either incidents. The children were taken to Valley Hospital.

"Parents need to reinforce the need for their kids to use crosswalks," Ackermann said. "How often do you see parents stepping out into traffic where they shouldn't, with their kids, and they're not paying attention to what's going on around them."

There are also more vehicles on the roads than ever, the chief said.

"Our roads were never built to handle the amount of traffic that we have today," Ackermann said. "Whether it's Glen Rock or Paramus, motorists need to slow down and pay attention to their surroundings."
