Ridgewood Nonprofit Makes State's List Of Most Endangered Historic Properties

The James Rose Center is the former home of landscape architect James Rose and the headquarters of a nonprofit research foundation.

RIDGEWOOD, NJ — A village property is one of the state's most endangered historic places, according to a list released Wednesday.

The James Rose Center is the only Bergen County property to make Preservation New Jersey's annual list of the top 10 Most Endangered Historic Places. The nonprofit will formally announced the list at a rally at the State House in Trenton Thursday.

The East Ridgewood Avenue property is the former home of landscape architect James Rose and the headquarters of a nonprofit landscape research and study foundation. Rose built the house in 1953 for his family. It is listed on the state Register of Historic Places.

The center is composed of interconnected garden pavilions that are held together with light frames. Engineers discovered problems with the property after a tree fell and damaged part of the roof in May 2016.

The center does not have insurance money to repair the damage and no money for capital improvements.

"With creative planning and fundraising, this unique and beautiful structure can be repaired and adapted to support the center's program," Preservation New Jersey said in a statement.

The endangered historic places program spotlights irreplaceable historic, cultural and architectural distinct properties that are in danger of being lost. Garden State residents nominate properties for inclusion on the list.
