River Edge Woman's Club Turns 75

Mementos will be on display at Library through March and April

For 75 years, the women in River Edge have banded together as part of the Woman's Club of River Edge to give back to the community. And all of their hard work has paid off as the group celebrates its 75th birthday this month.

As part of the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs of GFWC, the group has worked to promote the New Jeresey College for Women (Douglas College), preserving the Palisades, saving the New Jersey Highlands, supporting the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, providing funding for Special Olympics, Operation Smie, CARE and UNICEF.

Locally, each year the Woman's Club of River Edge sponsors two River Dell juniors to attend the Girls Career Institute at Douglas College for several days. While there, the two River Dell students listen to various women speakers about different careers that may interest them. It also gives the students the opportunity to experience a taste of college living.

Funding is also supplied to the Library (for the annual Cat in the Hat Read Across America event), Police and Fire departments, Ambulance Corp, Girl and Boy Scouts, 4th of July activities and a table at the annual River Edge Day.

To commemorate this historic occasion, Mayor Margaret Watkins issued a proclamation declaring the month of March as The Woman's Club of River Edge's 75th Anniversary Celebration. Also the display cases in the River Edge Public Library will become home for artifacts and photos highlighting the organization's history for the next two months.
