State Public Affairs Committee, SPAC
Ten years ago I joined the Junior League of Monmouth County to get to know more people and get involved locally. Little did I know, how much the Junior League would change me.
I used to hear Junior League and think Ladies with pearls that lunch. While this is a great style, boy was I wrong. The Junior League’s mission is to train volunteers and create civic leadership through volunteerism. I have been on the State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC), the advocacy arm of the Junior League, for five and a half years; currently I am in my second year as chairwoman of the committee. Before I joined SPAC, I knew nothing about advocacy and policy making. Now not only do I train Junior League members on advocacy, I have been involved with advocating for the passage of legislation on issues such as Human Trafficking, Violence Against Women and Childhood Nutrition and Fitness. I have given testimony to our State Legislators and have interacted with our federal and local legislators and leaders. The knowledge I have gained from the Junior League is extremely empowering.
The vision of the Junior League of Monmouth County is to facilitate the empowerment of girls to become confident women. This vision is brilliant, as the work we do to reach our goals actually empowers us to be confident women. It is great to know that no matter what committee you are on in the Junior League your contribution is making a positive impact in someone’s life.
