Eighty children and their fathers exercised together, ran the marshmallow dash, gyrated to keep Hoola Hoops spinning and vied in tug-of-war contests at two consecutive Preschool Fathers' Field Days at Holy Cross School in Rumson. The high-spirited events, attended by 100% of the fathers, reinforced the family atmosphere which is a hallmark of the school's educational environment.
"it's awesome to take a day from work to spend it with my daughter," remarked Brendan Burke of Fair Haven who joined in the fun with his daughter, Caelin, age four. "It's nice to meet other dads and get to know them," he said.
"I couldn't think of a better thing to be doing than being out here playing with my daughter," agreed Ken Caffrey, also of Fair Haven, whose daughter, four-year-old Orla, was as excited as her dad about their first Field Day together. "It's fun," said Orla with a big smile. "Every day Orla tells me about something fun she did that day," added Caffrey. "The teachers are incredible.
For George Spiropoulos of Fair Haven, the event was one of two Field Days he attended, one for his son, Timmy who is three, and the other for his five-year-old daughter, Rosie. "It's fun!" he tossed over his shoulder as he and Timmy hurried to the dads versus kids tug-of-war competition, which the children won handily!
The contests were followed by snacks, gifts made by the children, songs and posing for dad and child keepsake photos.
At the close of the event, Jill Fulton, Director of Early Childhood Programs, reminded the fathers, "When we asked the children what they loved about their dads, none of them mentioned what you bought for them, but they all talked about the time you spend with them."
Known for its welcoming family atmosphere, Holy Cross School delivers a healthy balance of faith formation, academic achievement and personal growth. For information about Holy Cross Preschool, visit www.holycrossschool.org.
