Training, a Unique Benefit provided by the JLMC

Training, which happens in a variety of ways, is what sets Junior League apart from just another volunteer opportunity. It was something I didn’t join the JLMC at all for… and in fact, didn’t even know they did that!! I literally joined for the social aspect and to do some “fell-good” things within the community.

What I have come to find out and learn--- are amazing things that you don’t necessarily get from college (which I graduated) or learn from work. In my first 3 years of the JLMC, I was on the fundraising committee. Thinking this would be a good fit because I am in sales and like excel… I learned a whole lot more than I could have imaged. I now am a well-oiled fundraising machine!!!

From event planning, sponsorships, asking for donations, raffle licenses, insurance requirements, meeting coordination and valuable communications skills are just some of the things I have come to learn. These are skills that I can use over and over and really apply to everyday life.

Another way our members are offered training is through the Association of Junior Leagues International. The options that are available range from weekly webinars (recent topics include interpersonal collaboration, conquering self-doubt and working with area community foundations) to nationwide conferences. I was even so lucky to have my league pay for me to attend ODI (Organizational Development Institute) in Kansas City last year. The three-day event gathered hundreds of women from Junior Leagues all over the country to participate in workshops and learning sessions. Together, we worked through topics about issue-based community impact, governance, leadership strategies, and so forth. This also provided a forum to meet and mingle with other Junior Leagues to share our triumphs, ask questions and swap ideas.

The benefit of training is one of many things that I greatly value as a Junior League member. I look forward to sharing my new knowledge within our League and encourage our members to continue learning, growing and broadening their perspectives through training.
