One person died Saturday night and another was injured after a car struck two pedestrians on a N.J. highway, police said.

A second victim sustained serious injuries and is in stable condition, Union Township Capt. Dave Tyms reported to nj.com.

The pedestrians had crossed the eastbound side of Route 22 at Sayre Road and were trying to cross the westbound side when a car hit them around 9:30 p.m., the report said.

An investigation is ongoing, and the victims’ identities are being withheld, pending family notification. Witnesses should call the Union Police Department’s traffic bureau at 908-851-5070, the report said

Traffic was being detoured after the accident with a 5 to 10 minute delay, according to 511.org.
