Bulletin: Two-Car Collision in Fanwood

One driver is taken to the hospital; second declines medical attention.

Two cars collided in the five-way intersection of Martine Avenue, Midway Avenue and Woodland Avenue in Fanwood Tuesday afternoon. While both drivers walked away from the crash, one was ultimately transported by ambulance to a hospital.

The Fanwood Police Department has not released the names of the drivers because the crash is currently under investigation.

Shortly before 2:30, a woman traveling south on Martine Avenue in a tan Ford Explorer attempted to make a left turn onto Woodlawn Drive. A blue Acura RSX, driven by a woman traveling north on Martine Avenue, struck the Ford in the middle of the intersection.

"I just heard a horn and a bang," recounted one resident, John, who said he lives near the intersection. He declined to provide his last name.

Three Fanwood police cruisers arrived at the intersection within minutes of the crash. Officers helped the shaken and tearful drivers from their cars and escorted them to opposite sides of Woodlawn Avenue. Drivers of the tow trucks called to the scene swept debris and coolant from the street.

As the drivers gave interviews to police, made calls on their cell phones and watched as their cars were taken away by a tow truck and flatbed, the driver of the Acura complained of chest pain. The passenger-side airbag of the Acura deployed during the crash, but the driver's-side airbag did not. She was helped into the back of a Fanwood Rescue Squad ambulance, which arrived on-scene at about 2:40 p.m. The driver of the Ford declined medical attention.

After the ambulance pulled away, traffic resumed its normal flow at about 3 p.m.
