Hikers and nature lovers -- come here about this wonderfulnatural resource, located only 10 miles from Scotch Plains. Volunteer Jack Higgins will share his knowledge.
Great Swamp is an almost 8000 acre wildlife refuge administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and located entirely in Morris County about 10 miles from SP.
Visitors can hike on marked trails in a Federal Wilderness area. They can walk on fully accessable boardwalk trails thru woods and over swamps to 3 observation blinds. Depending on the season, they can observe birds at feeders or look down in the swamp at frogs, snakes and turtles.
At some overlooks off the main road, they can observe blue birds, raptors,and various migrating waterfowl.
The main Visitors Center has several wildlife displays, displays on the history of the swamp, a wildflower garden with several bird feeders for close-up observation, a discovery den with several interactive exhibits, a library, a kids korner and a bookstore and nature shop.
All of these are free nature related activities and under a 30 minute drive away.
