The Imaginative Second Grade

The Academy in Action

The midpoint of the school year is a good time to see the progress of our second graders. By now, our students have adjusted to the more rigorous learning environment they initially encountered in first grade. They are guided through these challenges by our teachers,Mrs. Patricia Delaney and Mrs. Lisa Szustwal, along with their Instructional Aide, Mrs. Barbara Smith.

Second grade students are continuing to develop their reading and writing skills and have recently completed several interesting activities. All students read biographies about a famous American and competed with each other in a Social Studies Bee based on the biographies.

Mrs. Delaney’s students authored their first poems and Mrs. Szustwal’s students wrote their first fables. They shared their writings with each other, practicing their public speaking skills.

The second grade math curriculum focuses on mastering addition and subtraction, mentally solving problems, and knowing how to add numbers from memory. The students have recently learned double digit addition and subtraction and are starting geometry. They will focus on learning about solid figures, plane figures, and congruent symmetry.

Second graders are natural explorers with great imaginations. This combination makes science class insightful and engaging. The students recently learned about dinosaurs and acted as paleontologists on a dig as they searched for candy dinosaurs in layers of jello. Reading about and acting as paleontologists introduced a whole new career path to our inquisitive students!

Our second graders continue learning and preparing for the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, which they will celebrate after Easter this year. Mrs. Connie Boruch, our parish Pastoral Associate for Religious Education and Faith Formation, has been instrumental in the process by practicing how to properly receive the host with the children. We are very grateful to Mrs. Baruch for the time she has spent with our students.
