3 Dogs In Secaucus Red Roof Inn Attack Are Still Alive, Have Not Been Euthanized

The three dogs that attacked a man and a woman at the Secaucus Red Roof Inn in February have not been euthanized.

SECAUCUS, NJ — The three dogs that attacked a man and a woman at the Secaucus Red Roof Inn in February have not been euthanized as of April 17.

That's because their owner, Hoboken resident Robert Braxton, filed an appeal to keep the dogs alive. That appeal is currently working its way though the court system.

This is according to Christine Conte, director of the Secaucus Animal Shelter. The three dogs, all Cane Corsos, are still being housed at the town shelter until their fate is determined in the courts.

Secaucus municipal court Judge Karen Boylan previously ruled the dogs could be euthanized anytime after March 23, but she gave Braxton the option to appeal her decision. She came to this conclusion after the Hudson County Prosecutor argued the dogs should be put down; the prosecutor said the three dogs fit the legal definition of "vicious" after the brutal motel attack, and that there is a strong likelihood they will attack again.

Also, Braxton's criminal charges have not been resolved. He was charged with second-degree aggravated assault and two counts of endangering.

It was shortly before 8:30 p.m. Feb. 16, when the man and woman, a married couple from New York state, were walking in the Red Roof Inn parking lot with their two children.

Braxton was staying at the motel and his three dogs ran out of his room. With no provocation, they attacked the couple, dragging the woman to the ground first, video of the attack shows. Her husband and another man rushed to help her and the dogs then turned on the husband, mauling him as he lay on the ground in a sustained attack that went on for about two minutes.

The man and woman were rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center for severe injuries. The dogs ripped out a large piece of the woman's calf. But the man suffered the worst of the attack; he will have lifelong scars on his face and his arms.

Brower said seeing photos of their injuries and video of the attack convinced her the three dogs should be euthanized.

"He will be permanently disfigured. It is something he will have to live with for the rest of his life," she said previously.

Two days after the Secaucus attack, three Cane Corsos belonging to Braxton got out of a car near the Hoboken ShopRite and attacked two dog walkers walking eight dogs. They attacked a Bernadoodle, causing severe damage to his throat, but he survived.

Cane Corsos are Italian guard dogs, and Braxton had six of them in total. The three dogs that attacked in Secaucus are a mother, father and son.
