Man Charged With Yelling Bias Slurs At Xchange In Secaucus

Secaucus Police responded to Xchange on Aug. 1 for a call of a suspicious car driving around, with the driver yelling racial slurs:

SECAUCUS, NJ — In this week's Secaucus police blotter, it was reported that a local man was charged last Saturday with a bias crime.

Now today, Secaucus Police have released more information on the incident:

The incident happened at 7:51 p.m. Aug. 1: Secaucus Police responded to the area of 200 Riverside Station Blvd. on a report of a suspicious car driving around the area yelling racial slurs out of the vehicle.

When police got there, they met with the man outside of 200 Riverside Station Blvd. He said he witnessed a man in black car pull up to an Asian man and woman and yell a derogatory word at them before speeding away.

The man said he yelled to the driver to slow down at which point the driver yelled, "Go back to your country," said police. The man said the driver in the black car then pulled up to him, rolled down his window and held up a small sign that read, "F— you."

The driver then waited a moment and yelled, "You, f— you," while pointing at the couple. He then yelled take off your mask and go back to your country," before speeding away, said police.

Secaucus Police say they identified the driver as Alfred Viggiano, 69, of Secaucus, as the driver of the black car. He was taken into police custody Saturday, Aug. 6 and charged with bias intimidation [2C:16-1A(1)], a crime of the fourth-degree. Viggiano was issued his complaint warrant and was subsequently transported to the Hudson County Jail.
