Secaucus Car Stop Leads To Loaded Gun, Say Police

At 7:54 p.m. Wednesday, Secaucus Police Officer Michael Borrelli stopped the car on Rt. East for not having a driver side mirror.

SECAUCUS, NJ — A car stop by Secaucus Police Wednesday for not having a driver's side mirror resulted in a loaded handgun being found in the car, police said.

At 7:54 p.m. Wednesday, Secaucus Police Officer Michael Borrelli stopped the car on Rt. East for not having a driver side mirror. The officer said he detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the passenger compartment of the car and observed the passenger with suspected marijuana protruding out of his front pants pocket.

The driver, Malena Kennerly and sole passenger, Jeffrey Reynolds both exited the vehicle, while a search of the passenger compartment was undertaken. Officer Borrelli said he located some suspected marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a machete and large knife in the car.

Additionally, he located a high point 9mm semi-automatic handgun in Ms. Kennerly’s purse that was loaded with hollow point ammunition, said police.

While placing the duo under arrest, Reynolds was found in possession of a loaded Glock 36 .45 caliber handgun that was stolen from Ohio, charged police.

“I am proud that these two armed individuals were taken into custody for their crimes by the officers without resorting to any use of force," said Chief Miller.

Kennerly, 35 and Reynolds, 32, both of Cincinnati, OH, were each charged with Unlawful Possession of a Handgun [2C:39-5b(1)] and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose [2C:39-4a(1)]. Malena Kennerly was also charged with Possession of Hollow Point Ammunition [2C:39-3f] and two counts of Unlawful Possession of Weapons [2C:39-4d]. Reynolds was also charged with Receiving Stolen Property [2C:20-7], Possession of Marijuana [2C:39-10a(4)] and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia [2C:36-2]. Both were lodged in the Hudson County jail.
