17 Empty Desks On South Brunswick Football Field For Parkland

South Brunswick students put 17 empty desks on the football field, read something about each person killed and placed a rose on each desk.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — Hundreds of South Brunswick students walked out of class Wednesday morning and walked to the Vikings football field, in a ceremony teachers are calling "exceptionally powerful and moving."

The students placed 17 empty desks in the center of the football field, which was meant to symbolize the 17 students and staff killed in the Parkland shooting. In the Florida shooting, students were killed, as well as the football coach and athletic director. South Brunswick students read something about each person killed that day, and then placed a rose on each desk.

South Brunswick students worked with the administration to make the walkout happen. We estimate that out of 2,900 students enrolled at South Brunswick High School, about 400 students walked out today. There will be no punishments for them, superintendent Scott Feder said. Not all school districts in New Jersey were so lenient: Both Sayreville and Woodbridge said students would get a two-day suspension if they walked out today.
