Pedestrian Hit, Killed On Rt. 1 In South Brunswick

Breaking: More details have been released on the pedestrian killed on Rt. 1 Tuesday morning in South Brunswick, snarling traffic for miles.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — More details have been released on the pedestrian hit and killed on Rt. 1 early Tuesday morning in South Brunswick, shutting down Rt. 1 northbound and snarling traffic in the area for hours. The fatality caused traffic to be backed up for three miles on Rt. 1 north today in Mercer and Middlesex counties.

At 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, police received a call of a pedestrian struck on Rt. 1 northbound just past Henderson Road. The pedestrian appeared to have been in the lane of travel when he was struck by not one, but two tractor trailers, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:06 a.m. His identity is not yet known. South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau is on the scene and investigating the crash. They are working to positively identify the pedestrian.

"Traffic investigators are working to piece together the physical evidence at the scene with statements of the witnesses," said South Brunswick Deputy Police Chief James Ryan. "We believe the pedestrian was in the roadway when he was struck by two tractor trailers."

South Brunswick police released that photo, at the top, from Rt. 1 this morning. Rt. 1 northbound has been closed northbound since 5 a.m. Use Rt. 130 as an alternate.

The morning rush hour has been gridlocked with a back-up up to three miles long on Rt. 1. Police said they expect Rt. 1 to open normally again at 9:45 a.m.
