Middlesex County Woman Killed in South Brunswick Crash Thursday Night

The woman, 65, was crossing Rt. 1 at Deans Lane when she was struck Thursday night. This is the second fatal accident at Deans Lane in 2016.

South Brunswick, NJ - A Middlesex County woman has been revealed as the person who was struck and killed by a car on Rt. 1 Thursday night in South Brunswick, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey and Chief Raymond Hayducka of the South Brunswick Police Department said Friday.

An investigation by officers with South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau and detectives from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the 65-year-old woman was crossing Rt. 1 at Deans Lane at 9:56 p.m. Thursday. The woman was walking across the northbound lanes of Rt. 1 when she was struck by a 2016 Subaru Impreza driven by a 30-year-old Piscataway man. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Subaru stopped at the scene, police said.

This is the second fatal accident to occur at the Deans Lane/Rt. 1 intersection this year. As Patch reported, in January, a 13-year-old girl was killed when she was involved in a car crash at that same intersection on New Year's Day. The young teen was a passenger in a 2005 Nissan Sentra, which crossed over Rt. 1 to enter Deans Lane in the pre-dawn hours of Jan. 1. A 2009 Nissan Quest minivan, headed north on Rt. 1, broadsided the Sentra in the northbound lanes of the highway and sent the Sentra into a utility pole, police said. The girl as pronounced dead at the scene.

In Thursday night's accident, Rt. 1 northbound was closed from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. as a result of the investigation.

The Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital paramedics, Monmouth Junction Fire Department, New Jersey Department of Transportation, and the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the call.
