SOUTH BRUNSWICK— South Brunswick residents will see an increased police presence this holiday weekend, as police rev up their DWI patrols.
The South Brunswick Police Department are no stranger to the consequences of driving drunk. Three years ago, one of their own was struck by a drunk driver during the Thanksgiving weekend. The officer involved was injured in the crash, and never returned to duty, ultimately retiring.
So far, 26 accidents have occurred in the town as a result of drunk driving, Captain Jim Ryan told Patch. The SBPD is working to ensure no more happen this holiday season.

“We want this time of year to be a happy time with family and friends. If you have been drinking at an event, use a car service or designated driver to get home so the memories of the day are positive. Our priority is the safety of all motorists this holiday season,” said Chief Raymond Hayducka.
Last year, 15 people died statewide over the Thanksgiving weekend, a 10% increase from 2014. Six of the drivers in those crashes were intoxicated.

Here are some tips for safe driving this Thanksgiving:
- Even one drink can impair your judgment and increase the risk of getting arrested for driving drunk—or worse, the risk of having a crash.
- If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Plan ahead; designate a sober driver before the party begins.
- If you have been drinking, do not drive. Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.
