SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — It's happening. On Tuesday, South Brunswick introduced an ordinance to establish a Youth Advisory Board in the township.

This board will advise the mayor and council on issues affecting youth in the township. South Brunswick teen Kaushik Rathuryan presented a plan for the formation of the board during the June 8 council meeting.

“Council listened with interest and agreed to form such a Board,” said Township attorney Don Sears. “It’s (ordinance) been reviewed by staff as well as the gentleman who made the presentation.”

According to the proposed ordinance, the board will consist of nine civically oriented high schoolers who will meet once a month. They discuss issues like mental health, substance abuse, bullying, etc. All board members must be South Brunswick residents and attend high school.

The council will also appoint non-voting members to advise the board. They will include members from the council, the South Brunswick Police Department, the Board of Education, and other members appointed by the township manager.
