South Brunswick Police Housed at Courtyard Marriott on Rt. 535

The Marriott on Rt. 535 is housing officers during the storm, saving "hundreds" in overtime payments, the department says.

South Brunswick, NJ - South Brunswick police aren’t going home to their families during this blizzard — and they aren’t being paid overtime, either.

Instead, officers are staying at the Courtyard Marriott on Route 535 for the duration of the storm.

“We need round-the-clock support, and it was more economical and helps moral to provide them hotel rooms,” said South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka. ”The officers are working 12- to 16-hour shifts. By putting them up in hotels, we get better-rested officers back quicker.”

After running the numbers, the township also found it was cheaper to pay for the hotel rooms than to bring in different officers on overtime pay.

“It has the potential to save us several hundred dollars depending on how long we need it,” said department spokesman Captain James Ryan.

The Marriott, by Exit 8A of the New Jersey Turnpike, offered “deeply discounted” rates, Ryan said. With more than a foot of snow in South Brunswick already, and 20 inches expected overall, the storm is expected to impact police operations through Monday.
