South Brunswick Police Save Three Lives in One Week

Police saved the lives of two residents who lived alone and were found unresponsive. They also used Narcan to save the life of a young man.

South Brunswick police officers have saved the lives of three residents in the last week.

In two cases, people who lived alone were found unresponsive in their homes, and in the third case, officers used Narcan to revive a man who had overdosed on heroin, authorities said.

“In each of these cases officers exemplified the best of our department in taking actions and getting people the needed medical attention,’’ Chief Raymond Hayducka said in a prepared statement. “If you have a concern about the welfare of a friend or relative do not hesitate to give us a call to ask for assistance. All three of these incidents were life threatening had the officers not intervened.”

According to a news release from South Brunswick Lt. James Ryan:

When Sgt. Ron Seaman and Officers Salvatore Fama and Brady Shelcusky arrived at the home, the door was locked, but they could see a pair of glasses on the floor inside.

Police then determined that the man’s cell phone had last been used at the home on Feb. 23.

Police forced their way inside and found the semi-conscious man on the bedroom floor. He’d suffered a stroke three or four days earlier.

He was rushed to an area hospital, where medical personnel told his family that his condition would have been life-threatening if he had not been found.

Around 12:40 p.m. March 3, a cleaning woman called police because she’d reported for work at a Springwood Court home, but the door was locked and no one was answering it.

She told Officers Ryan Bartunek and Tara Jairdullo that the 75-year-old homeowner lived alone.

Police saw several days worth of newspapers on the front lawn, so they peered through a window. They spotted the man, lying face-down in the hallway.

They forced their way inside, and he was taken to to an area hospital. Police later learned he’d been lying on that floor for a few days.

Around 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, Officers Bobby Ayala, Tim Hoover and Don Whicker were sent to a Deerberry Lane home, after parents called police because their 21-year-old son had overdosed on heroin.

He had a pulse, but was not breathing. They administered two doses of Narcan and he began to breathe. Eventually he woke up and was able to speak. The young man was taken to an area hospital for treatment. It was the third time in the last year that victim has been saved with Narcan - he has previously been revived by police and paramedics, authorities said.
