Announcements

  • The Water Quality Public Forum will take place this Thursday, June 16th at 7:30 p.m. in Village Hall.
  • The will continue every weekend, May 6th – August 27th, 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
  • Scooter Shelter Parking was been installed around the Village.
  • The Main Street South Orange Farmers’ Market will be every Wednesday 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

  • Jutta Gossner-Smith and Tiffany Boyd-Hodgson, founders of Hua Mei charter school addressed the board.
  • An inquiry into a recent Department of Recreation hiring was brought up and it was deemed by Village Council that all laws and regulations were followed.
  • The situation involving where to hold the Columbia High School Prom Showcase was addressed.  that they have reached a deal “in principle” with SOPAC to hold the event there.
  • An issue involving burned out Gaslights was brought to the Board’s attention and they are seeking further action from PSE&G.

The board renewed the liquor licenses of thirteen licensees.

Conference Agenda

The Board of Trustees on two Board of Education resolutions sent to them.

Trustee Howard Levison updated the board on the Finance and Information Technology Committee

  • Among the items discussed was implementing a C3 alert system and hiring a potential lobbyist to help secure funds

Trustee Mark Rosner updated the board on the Planning and Zoning Committee

  • Among the items discussed was a speed table on Fairview Avenue and contacting PSE&G about the dysfunctional Gaslights
  • Trustee Michael Goldberg updated the board on the Special Improvement District advisory committee

Mark Hartwyk, Executive Director of the Parking Authority, gave an update to the board

  • Among the items discussed was that all the Scooter Shelter spaces were sold
  • Village President Alex Torpey suggested that the broader issue of parking in town be looked at.

Trustee Nancy Gould updated the board on the Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee

  • Among the items discussed was the condition of the tennis courts, the Summer Concerts Schedule was released and YMCA offered to assist with basketball programming

Trustee Deborah Davis Ford updated the board on the Legal and Personnel Committee

  • Among the items discussed were the placement of a NextG antenna across from Seton Hall University and the Village’s hiring policies are being reviewed

Trustee Janine Bauer updated the board on Public Works & Infrastructure Committee

  • Among the items discussed were single streamed recycling and sharing additional services with Maplewood

Sal Renda, Village Engineer, updated the board on Village Infrastructure and Maintenance

  • Among the items discussed were additional improvement to the tennis courts at The Baird, The Project Along the River received a Green Acres grant and The Baird may be getting a renovation

Trustee Goldberg updated the board on the Public Safety Committee

  • Among the items discussed were the new red light cameras, new down town cameras, speeding concerns on Walton Avenue and raising funds for National Night Out

Village President Alex Torpey gave the Village President’s Report

  • President Torpey will be giving a presentation at the Board of Trustees Planning Meeting
  • His official office hours will be on Tuesdays from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Village Council Steve Rother brought up an ordinance creating bicycle lane crosswalks

Two ordinances, one asking for fees to place political lawn signs and one that barred more than one lawn sign per property, were deemed unconstitutional and stricken

  • Trustee Goldberg voiced concern with the ordinances being stricken, feeling it will be “problematic”

Village Council Rother announced the creation of a ordinance that will establish and increase fees

A resolution was brought up to oppose the regulation of natural gas development in the Delaware River Basin

A Board of Trustees Planning Meeting is scheduled for June 20th at Seton Hall University
