Trustees Fund Non-Profits, Form Historical Preservation Committee
Passing of 2012 budget delayed; funding for non-profits moves forward.

In a packed meeting at Town Hall on Monday night that lasted nearly four hours, the South Orange Board of Trustees passed an ordinance to establish a Historic Preservation Committee. The board also voted to continue funding two non-profits, with stipulations.
The ordinance to establish the historic preservation commission was in the news earlier this week because authorities have filed an application for a permit to demolish owns on Scotland Road. The commission will have to give approval to any plans to demolish historic buildings in the village or to subdivide a property.
Members of , of which the house is a part, is fighting the permit, as are some neighbors. The demolition permit is heading to the planning board for review.

Several people, including the president of the MPHDA, spoke in favor of the forming the commission and the passing of the ordinance was greeted with hearty applause from the audience.
The Trustees also passed two resolutions executing : the Community Coalition on Race (for an amount not to exceed $18,000) and YouthNet (for an amount not to exceed $15,000). The CCR resolution was passed with amended language stipulating that the CCR send a revised service agreement to the Financial Committee for review, with a conclusion deadline of June 10.

Several audience members spoke in the public comment portion of the meeting in favor of continued funding to both groups; one resident spoke against continuing to fund the CCR.
Although the board was expected to pass the 2012 budget tonight, there was a delay in the state review process in Trenton.
Trustees also announced the success of the recent South Orange River Day, discussed plans for this year's Memorial Day Service (which will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Duck Pond), and confirmed that single stream recycling will begin on July 1, 2012.
The Board of Trustees Annual Organizational Meeting will be held on Monday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall. Village Offices will be closed on Monday, May 28 in observance of Memorial Day.
