NATIONAL PREVENTION WEEK, MAY 12TH -18TH
National Prevention Week is a time to highlight the message of prevention and healthy living. FAMILYConnections is doing that though ADAPT.
This week is National Prevention Week, a health observance dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around substance abuse and mental health issues. At this time, individuals, organizations and coalitions are challenged to come together to highlight the message of prevention and healthy living, as a way to create a safer and healthier nation.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), more than 58 million Americans participated in binge drinking at least once in the last 30 days, consuming five or more drinks in one sitting. 22.5 million Americans currently use illicit drugs. Young people are especially vulnerable for substance abuse at the start of the summer, with graduation parties, proms, weddings and outdoor events.
Prevention is key to addressing these issues in a positive way. Everyone plays a role in prevention through the choices they make in their daily lives, impacting their health and emotional well being. You can choose not to smoke, try an illicit drug or drink alcohol in excess. You can choose to seek help if you experience a problem or stressful situation. You can encourage family and friends to make good choices in their lives. Talking with young people about the consequences of underage drinking and drug abuse will make a difference.

FAMILYConnections, a non-profit community based agency, is fighting the battle against underage drinking and substance abuse by leading ADAPT. This Essex County community coalition, with over 90 members, is working to prevent and reduce substance abuse through education and innovative programs. ADAPT is currently sponsoring a "What Keeps You Drug and Alcohol Free" Poster Contest for students in grades 6 through 12. The contest runs through May 31st and gives this age group a voice for change. All students are invited to participate. Prizes will be given.
