PlaidCad Says: She Sells Seersucker by the Sea Shore

Do you seersucker like I know seersucker? I'm going to guess not, since I haven't (YET!) seen much around town. I was raising this point with a classmate, in fact, who confused seersucker with, first, a fish, then a peplum. No, so truly no. Seersucker is not a fish.

Seersucker, my good readers, was a favorite fabric of the British living in warm colonies such as India. Then it morphed into summer wear in the South, then into sort of hipster fashion statement in the F. Scott Fitzgerald days. Damon Runyon wore it, supposedly to confuse people into wondering if he was rich or poor.  

But what about today? Does seersucker have a subtext? Yes, but I don't know what it is. (More on that later.)

My point here is simply that seersucker, hot weather fabric from way back before air conditioning, when a ceiling fan was the limit of high tech, worked to keep people cool, crisp and dressy. The stripes can work for you if you're challenged by plaid (we'll get to madras next heat wave) and it's also retro-cool. 

I challenge you to get your stripes on or get some seersucker into the rotation even if it's hidden (as in underwear). It would be a fine bathing suit if you're shy about trying new fashion statements, but why hesitate?  It works like air conditioning for your body and makes you look like a character from The Great Gatsby. So, pretty much it's cool and it's cooler.
