South Orange-Maplewood Adult School 80th Anniversary Gala

On Saturday May 4th, The South Orange-Maplewood Adult School celebrated its 80th anniversary, Eva Samo’s 50 year affiliation with the Adult School, and Sue Marcus’ 18th and final year as Executive Director of the Adult School. Board member Emily Zacharias hosted the gala at her home with food catered by S&P to Taste.

Co-president of the Adult School’s Board of Trustees Carol Petrallia remarked, “We had a wonderful evening celebrating two remarkable women for their inspiration and dedicated service to life-long learning.  And we celebrate our Adult School and the work of all our teachers and students who make our classes and programs special and successful! We're ready to go another 80 years!” 

In addition to speeches from staff, former presidents of the Board and other long-time Board members, proclamations from the New Jersey Legislature were read in recognition of the valuable contributions of Sue, Eva and the Adult School.

Co-president Rhonda Johnson also chimed in about the tone of the evening. “This past Saturday we had an opportunity to celebrate a unique convergence of special occasions. We brought family and friends together to celebrate the accomplishments of two incredible women, Sue and Eva, and our 80-year history with stories, laughter, food and music.  Any time you get the staff, trustees and friends of SOMAS together, you are in for a fascinating evening!”

With nearly 100 people in attendance the evening was testament to the importance the Adult School has had and continues to have on this community, and gratitude was felt by all.
