To camp or not. What? – A hapless parent’s saga
A mom's journey figuring out what/when to send her 6-year-old son to summer camp.
Well, it’s near summer already and parents are gearing towards camp season with confidence. Right! At least, ones like me seem to feel we never quite figure everything out. How young is too young? Should we go for the outdoorsy ones or try something local like the Y? Well, outdoorsy are too far away from the SOMA area, maybe we should wait. Hmm! After delving through these and trying to decide what works for my kids, I conclude that now I have new set of questions.
Should I send them to camp for all 7-8 weeks? Do they deserve down time when
they just do nothing, simply relax, watch TV, and play video games the whole
day. I think we all deserve a do-nothing phase for a few weeks every year, don’t
we? How about all the sport specialty camps? It seems that all of my older son’s
friends are learning ice hockey, lacrosse, and fencing, while I manage to be one
of the last parents to re-register him into swimming. Of course, he again landed
in the most inconvenient class schedule.
Are there some perennially behind parents out there who seem to never
quite figure everything out or is it just me?
