  • Village President Alex Torpey proclaimed the month of November as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” in the Township of South Orange Village.

Presentations

  • Dr. Janine Buckner and Sgt. Alan DiEsso presented an update on the Neighborhood Watch Organization.  Buckner is the Resident Coordinator of the program and re-started it just over a year ago.

Buckner presented an overview of the chain of command to get alerts out to residents.  Starting with the South Orange Police Department, information is trickled down to Buckner who sends it to zone directors, followed by street captains to the residents themselves.
Buckner also announced the participation of Seton Hall University (SHU) in the program.  Should the alert involve SHU, the SOPD, through Buckner, would alert SHU entities who would update campus security and the SHU safety blotter.

Buckner also pointed out that this was a “two-way” process.  The process can be reversed where residents inform their street captains of an issue which is then trickled back up through the zone directors to Buckner to the SOPD.

DiEsso brought up how pleased he was with residents being alert and telling the SOPD when they notice something suspicious, calling them the “eyes and ears on the street.”  However, DiEsso also warned that residents should not take justice in to their own hands.

“We don’t encourage vigilants, we don’t want mobs chasing people down,” said DiEsso.  “We want (residents) to call us.  We react quickly.”

Buckner can be reached for Neighborhood Watch matters at nwc.sonj@gmail.com.

“It makes a difference when we all participate,” said Buckner.  “Please encourage your neighbors to get involved.”
