$1.3M Union County Culvert Replacement Project Includes Springfield

Three towns in the county will get new bridge-like structures this summer.

Union County will spend $1.33 million to replace culverts in Springfield, Roselle and Berkeley Heights this summer, according to a published report.

Freeholder Linda Carter told NJToday.net that culverts, the small bridge-like structures that allow water to flow beneath a road, are important to keep traffic moving smoothly.

The county will replace the 87-year-old culvert on Hillside Avenue near Ann Place in Springfield. A tributary of the Rahway River runs beneath the roadway. NJToday.net reports that about 40 feet of the roadway will be removed and replaced at a projected cost of $516,265. Wildlife uses the river, so workers will recreate a natural streambed inside the culvert.
