Orange those Saint James the Apostle Students Smart?
Students apply math skills to create a new orange soda product.
Saint James the Apostle students in Mrs. Melissa Robbins’ 6th grade math class applied their knowledge of ratio, proportion, volume and mass units to manufacture a new orange soda product. The goal of the project was to be assume the role of an Orange Soda developer. Over the course of three days the students worked in groups as developers, taste testers, and manufacturers. Using measuring tools including measuring cups and spoons, the class experimented and tested numerous combinations of orange juice and baking soda to create the best recipe for their Orange Soda. After numerous trials the students picked their top two favorites for taste testing. The best soda recipe was used to expand their knowledge of measuring solids and liquids, converting units, and using ratio and proportion to manufacture and mass produce their product. Then the two teams had their best creation taste-tested by select faculty and students. The project concluded with the students calculating costs, determining a selling price and evaluating profits. Students were highly engaged to collaborate and create a product using mathematics and science skills.
