Other than a low turnout, there were few surprises in Springfield’s results for this week’s primary elections.
The two local candidates, Democrat , ran unopposed for their perspective party’s nomination for the single contested seat on the Township Committee. Keffer garnered 309 votes against one write-in candidate; Shehady 151 against two.
With seats on the County Democratic Committee up for vote, Democrats attracted more people to the polls overall than the Republicans. Democrats cast 2,401 votes and Republicans cast 942. Springfield voters checked off Keffer’s name more than any other candidate, ahead of General Assembly candidates Bruce Bergen and Norman Albert. , received 289 votes and Albert received 284.
Democratic Freeholder candidates Angel Estrada, Christopher Hudak and Vernell Wright received 263, 260 and 256 Springfield votes, respectively. All three candidates also placed in the .
On the Republican side, incumbent State Senator Thomas Kean was the chief vote-getter, garnering 165 votes in his unopposed contest. His colleagues in the assembly Jon Bramnick and Nancy Munoz—both also running unopposed—respectively received 160 and 155 votes. Freeholder candidates Andrew Smith and Edwin Ortiz both received 154 votes.
