Who Can Pull the Cards to Become The King of Hearts?

Dayton's annual male beauty pageant-like event is a cause for laughs and good cheer.

Do you have what it takes to be the King of Hearts? A Jonathan Dayton High School tradition, King of Hearts is hosted every year around Valentine's Day to benefit Student Council. In a gender reversal of a beauty pageant, the event pits Dayton men against each other in a battle of grace and poise.

Rounds are devoted to talent, swimwear, formal wear and Q&A. But contestants and audience members are aware of the potential for comedy; King of Hearts continues to be one of the funniest nights on the school calendar. This event brings students out of their shells, (and awkwardly out of their clothes) as men strut their stuff on stage and walk arm-in-arm with Dayton cuties.

Continuing to strengthen the relationship between JDHS and the town, David's Formal Wear on Mountain Ave. outfits all participants in tuxedos ranging from traditional black to the pimped-out purple.

Past participants' crazy talents have ranged from imitating teachers to performing an interpretation of a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly (Matt Sauerhoff, this was the greatest moment of your youth.)

Class of  '06 graduate Zach Silverman reflects on the experience: "King of Hearts was one of the best experiences in high school. It gave me confidence to go into acting."

Zach has been in Gossip Girl, and is currently being featured in a Skin ID commercial on air. Is JDHS to thank? Maybe!

John Turcott and Mai Linh Mguyen host this year's event, which is slated for Feb. 17 in Halsey Hall Auditorium (the event was originally planned for Feb. 10, but was pushed back because of weather).

Student Council is looking for door prizes. If you are interested in donating, please reach out to Student Council President Ross Fish at phishphace01@comcast.net or Student Council Advisor Mary Cokeing at mcokeing@springfieldschools.com.

Rumor has it prom bids may be auctioned off!
