1. Avoid Non-Essential Travel On These Dates, Summit Officials Say (patch.com) — Summit residents are being urged to avoid non-essential NJ Transit travel on several June and July World Cup game days, when MetLife Stadium crowds are expected to strain the rail system. City officials warn that congestion and delays could affect Summit’s station for hours around each match and suggest remote work or extra travel time for those who must commute.
2. New Playgrounds Leave Seniors Feeling Left Behind In Summit (patch.com) — Summit officials are pressing ahead with three new playgrounds, including Mabie, Tatlock, and a planned East Summit neighborhood park, but not everyone is pleased. At the June 3 Council meeting, a resident argued seniors are being overlooked and floated senior housing at the former firehouse, while council members defended broader efforts, including initiatives tied to Silver Summit for older residents.
3. Mayor Calls Out Council During Statement At Summit Meeting (patch.com) — Tensions at Summit’s June 3 Common Council meeting spilled into public view as Mayor Fagan criticized the council majority over Board of Education appointments and a vetoed Maple Street outdoor dining ordinance. Council members pushed back, arguing the disputes center on process, while also highlighting ongoing work on the budget, traffic improvements, and playground investments that affect residents citywide.
4. Junior League Of Summit Gives $46,000 To Support Mabie Playground Redevelopment (tapinto.net) — Summit is moving ahead with three new playgrounds, helped by a $46,000 Junior League donation to redevelop inclusive, ADA-accessible Mabie Playground. At a recent Common Council meeting, officials outlined delays at Mabie, near-completion at Tatlock, and a smaller, walkable East Summit playground now in public review, with construction targeted for fall if council approval and grant funding stay on track.
5. Critical Child Advocates Sworn In By Union County Judge (patch.com) — Summit resident Elizabeth Maher is among seven new Court Appointed Special Advocates sworn in to support children in foster care in Union and Passaic counties. These volunteers, including neighbors from Cranford, Westfield, Linden, and South Plainfield, will work closely with kids and the courts to ensure each child’s needs and best interests are heard and protected.
