Apply, Cover, Enjoy in New Jersey: Raising Sun Safety Awareness

May is Melanoma Awareness Month. The Enright Melanoma Foundation, a NJ-based nonprofit organization, announces it is raising sun safety awareness in schools, libraries, towns, parks, camps and pools across NJ, to help prevent melanoma through education and early detection.

Designed by skin care professionals from the Enright Melanoma Foundation, the Enright Sun Safety Certification™ programs, are free, online education courses for ages 5 and over, that take about 15 minutes to complete. As part of a 2017 “Apply, Cover, Enjoy” Campaign, all NJ residents are encouraged to complete the online programs to become get educated and certified in Sun Safety™. These programs can be found at www.ApplyCoverEnjoy.org.

Every year, more than 5 million Americans are treated for skin cancer. This year alone, more than 10,000 deaths in the US will be caused by melanoma skin cancer. Fortunately, when detected in its earliest stages, melanoma cancer is highly curable and preventable.

Avoid the dangers from sun exposure by:

*Always apply sunscreen with SPF 30–50, thirty minutes prior to going outside.

*Wear a hat and UV sunglasses to protect your head and face.

*Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, and more often after swimming or sweating

*Avoid the sun as much as possible between the hours of 10 am–4 pm or stay in shade.

*DO NOT USE TANNING BEDS!
