BMW With Key Fob Stolen In Summit, Returned, Then Stolen Again
Police also reported several other unlocked cars stolen in June and July, and the theft of a $2,200 bike.

SUMMIT, NJ — Police reports from June and July show numerous cars and bikes stolen in Summit — including a BMW with a key fob left in it that was reported stolen in June, returned, and then stolen again two weeks later.
The first theft to the BMW occurred around June 25. On that date, at 7:30 a.m., someone reported the theft of their unsecured 2018 white BMW X3 with a key fob left inside, police said.
It had been in a driveway on Midland Terrace. It was valued at approximately $35,000.

Then, on July 11 at around the same time, 7:33 a.m., someone reported the theft of the same vehicle from the Midland Terrace driveway. The victim had last seen it the previous night around 9 p.m., according to police.
Police noted, "The vehicle, which had previously been stolen and returned, with one of the key fobs missing, did not have the remaining key fob in the vehicle at the time of the theft. The vehicle was valued at approximately $35,000 at the time of the theft."

Here are other vehicle thefts reported in June and July by the Summit Police Department:
June
June 1: At 3:20 a.m., someone reported the theft of a white 2013 Jeep Cherokee parked in the driveway to a Springfield Avenue residence. At the time off the theft, the value of the vehicle was not known.
June 5: At 7:06 p.m., someone reported the theft of three bicycles from the rear yard of a Mountain Avenue residence. Taken were one black/blue mountain bike, one green/black mountain bike, and a black beach cruiser. The total value was $900.
June 6: At 1:58 a.m., someone reported a motor vehicle theft in progress at an Oak Ridge Avenue residence. Taken from the driveway was an unsecured, black Audi Q7 with the key fob inside the vehicle. At the time of the theft, the value of the vehicle was estimated to be approximately $50,875.
June 15: At 8:09 a.m., someone reported that a black 2020 Audi Q5 was stolen. It was unlocked with the key fob left inside, and parked in the driveway to a Parkview Terrace residence. It contained a pink Neiman Marcus women’s wallet containing personal identification and credit cards and one UppaBaby car set. The total value of the stolen items was $55,350.
June 20: At 12:06 p.m., someone reported a stolen bicycle from the rear of a Springfield Avenue business. The bike was a black Trek Hybrid with a small black cargo bag under the seat. It was worth approximately $1,000.
June 25: At 11:52 a.m., someone reported the theft of a 2015 blue Land Rover Range Rover worth $50,000 from the driveway of an Oak Ridge Avenue residence. The key fob had been left inside.
July
July 2: At 9:51 a.m., someone reported that a silver Huffy mountain bike was stolen from Franklin School. It was valued at $200.
July 3: At 8:17 a.m., someone reported the theft of a bicycle from a Summit Avenue residence. The victim reported the theft occurred sometime in the prior 10 days. The bicycle, a blue Cannondale Road Bike, had been secured with a combination cable lock to a rack in a storage room of the residence. The victim estimated the bike's value at $2,200.
Two residents scare off thieves
There were also numerous thefts of items from unlocked cars, and two cases in which a resident reported catching someone in the act:
- On June 1, at 7:01 p.m., someone reported an attempted burglary to an unsecured motor vehicle parked in the driveway to a Woodland Avenue residence. The victim reported to have witnessed a "black male, wearing an orange shirt, enter the vehicle. Upon confrontation by the resident, the individual vacated the area in a white Mercedes SUV," said police. At the time of the report, nothing appeared to have been stolen from the victim’s vehicle, police said.
- On June 4 at 5:51 a.m., police got a report of an attempted burglary to a motor vehicle parked in the driveway to a Shadyside Avenue residence. The victim reported to have witnessed a "black male in a green/white hooded sweatshirt exit a black BMW sedan and attempt to gain entry to the victim’s vehicle," police said. The person was startled when the victim interrupted the attempt and proceeded to flee in the vehicle toward Beechwood Road, police said.
