Boys Basketball Falls Short of Win at Scotch Plains

Sophomore guard Ba'Shawn Mickens leads the Hilltoppers with 18 points in loss to Scotch Plains.

Summit dropped their second game of the season on the road at the Scotch Plains Tuesday night. 

Summit received scoring from seven different players to get the game to 26-25. At the start of the second half, after Scotch Plains had started pull away, a jump shot by sophomore guard Ba'Shawn Mickens pulled Summit to within 39-29. Scotch Plains, however, answered with an 8-0 run to pull ahead 47-29. The final score was 72-56.

Mickens, however, had a fine game for Summit. He led the Hilltoppers with an 18-point performance that included two 3-pointers and several fine, driving layups. Also scoring in double-digits for Summit was senior guard Chris Cafiero, who netted 11 points.

Summit scored the final eight points of the third quarter and the final five of the game, including a long 3-pointer that went in at the buzzer.

The Hilltoppers with a 58-50 conference home loss to Union Catholic.Summit will compete next in the John "Butch" Kowal Holiday Tournament at Rahway. The Hilltoppers' first game comes against Watchung Hills on Dec. 26. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. Kowal Tournament varsity games – also taking place at Roselle Catholic – will continue Tuesday, Dec. 28 and conclude Thursday, Dec. 30.
