The United Methodist Church of Summit is a spiritual home to many people in the community. Our open-door policy has fostered different groups and organizations using our church building, including a great number of people who gather here daily for Alcoholics Anonymous’ meetings.
We realized that there is a need for a “safe space” for recovering individuals, their friends and families, and saw that our church could provide that space by offering a worship service for all those people whose lives have been affected by alcoholism and addiction. We wanted to provide a worship experience where many of the themes and issues of Recovery could be woven into a service which, at its core, is inviting individuals to develop a relationship with a God of love.
How important is this service and how many people do we hope to reach? Latest statistics indicate over 3,000 people were hospitalized for substance abuse and dependence in Union County alone over a one-year period. Over 1900 minors in the State were hospitalized in a year. These numbers don’t include the thousands of people who were affected by alcoholism or drug addiction who did not show for treatment, and they do not they include the thousands of families and friends whose lives are impacted by loved ones with addiction.
We want to meet this need head-on with what the United Methodist Church of Summit does best – welcoming and accepting people wherever they are on their journey and providing a safe space to nurture their spiritual needs.
Everyone is invited to attend the worship service created to speak to the needs of people in recovery as well as their families and friends. Please join us on Sunday, October 7th, and the first Sunday of the month thereafter, in the UMC Chapel located on Deforest Avenue. The service starts at 8.30 am. We provide light refreshments.
