Cancer Survivors Show Spirit on Lake Parsippany

On April 14th Pathways Dragon Boat Team SOS held its first practice of the 2014 season on Lake Parsippany. While dragon boating may have originated 2,500 years ago, it had been transformed into a unique way for breast cancer survivors to stay active and connect with others.

In its seventh season, team members are women who are either currently in treatment or long term cancer survivors. Join in the camaraderie every Monday night through October and get the blood flowing and experience the team’s energy. Register now to secure a spot on the team!

A dragon boat is a long, colorful wooden or fiberglass boat adorned with a dragon head at the front and tail at the back — which seats 20 paddlers and a drummer. The team paddles in harmony to the beat of a drum. The sport of dragon boating provides the benefit of vigorous exercise and may help prevent or relieve the symptoms of lymphedema — a common side effect after breast surgery or radiation.

For those feeling unsure, please note no experience is required.  Practices are held each week from 6 to 7:15 pm on Lake Parsippany; the team plans on attending 5 races.  Coach Ellen Law is a US National Team Member.

The Pathways team is an affiliate of the NJ Dragon Boat Club and is called Team SOS which stands for Save Our Sisters. In the spirit and tradition of teamwork in dragon boating, members find they gain strength and vitality through paddling with other women who have been in the same boat.  Please call Michele Visco at 908-273-4242 ext 154 for more information. Registration is required.
