Complete Game for Floegel as Summit Defeats Scotch Plains 6-1

The Hilltoppers took down one of the county's top teams Monday night, beating Scotch Plains for the first time in seven years.

Varsity Baseball Coach Kevin Zaleski won't soon forget Monday's big win over Scotch Plains...for that matter, neither will hurler John Floegel, who not only pitched a complete game to extend his record to 3-0, but contributed to the Hilltoppers first win against Scotch Plains in seven years.

"This was a big win, in a highly-competitive game against a top team in Union County," Zaleski said after Monday's home game.

The coach said Summit hasn't been able to outscore Scotch Plains (11-6) in at least seven years. So what made today's game different? Chalk it up to a mix of confidence stemming from a few hits early in the game, as well as solid pitching and defense throughout the game.

"We just came out confident," Zaleski said. "We outplayed them altogether — pitching, hitting, base runnig. We put up three runs in the first inning."

In addition to the three first inning hits, the Hilltoppers scored runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Nick Abbott, Justin Vitti and Cam Fuoti had two hits each. Floegel pitched five scoreless innings, giving up his only run in the sixth.
