Driver Killed After Car Crashes Into Tree In Union County

Authorities said the vehicle crossed into the opposite lane before striking a tree in Hillside Sunday morning.

HILLSIDE, NJ — A 37-year-old driver died Sunday morning after a vehicle crashed into a tree in Hillside, authorities said.

Police said the crash happened around 8:14 a.m. near the intersection of North Avenue and Riverside Drive. According to the Hillside Police Department, the vehicle was traveling southbound on North Avenue when it crossed into the opposite lane and struck a tree on the front lawn of a home.

The driver, identified as Jose Cardona, was taken to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, officials said. Police said they have not yet confirmed his place of residence.

No other injuries were reported, and authorities said the nearby property was not damaged.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
