Electrical Fire Reported At Summit Convenience Store

Smoke could be seen coming from the Food Express Deli and Convenience Store on Broad Street in Summit early Tuesday morning.

SUMMIT, NJ — A fire broke out at the Food Express Deli and Convenience Store at 202 Broad Street in Summit on Tuesday morning.

The Summit Fire Department also responded to a report from the Summit Police Department of smoke coming from the building on Sept. 5 at 6:35 a.m.

Smoke could be seen from the entrance to the building and along the roof line and upon further investigation, the fire was found in the area around the electrical panel and wall located at the front of the store, Summit Fire Department reported.

Additional firefighter support and resources were requested and crews used dry chemical extinguishers to contain the fire. Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) then cut the power for the fire to be extinguished with hose lines using water. The fire was fully extinguished at 7 a.m.

Damage was confined to the area of the electrical panel in the front of the store. No injuries to store workers or firefighters were reported.

The Summit Fire Department was assisted at the scene by Union and Springfield fire departments. Westfield Fire Department provided station coverage.

The fire is being investigated by the Summit Fire Department Investigations Unit.
