Austrian director Haneke won the top prize at Cannes for this black-and-white film set in in an isolated German village, just before the start of the First World War. The local authorities enforce a rigid moral code. Violators, especially children, are punished both physically and psychologically for the slightest infraction. The order of things is disturbed by a series of violent events. The person who can most clearly see what's happening is an outsider — the village schoolteacher — but his words of warning fall on deaf ears.
