Field Hockey Picks up Win at Glen Ridge

Hilltoppers win 4-0.

The Summit High School field hockey team continues to start their season on a good note.  The first time playing Glen Ridge, Summit crushed them 4-0.

Within the first two minutes of the game, Summit had an offensive penalty corner. Senior, Hannah Pollinger scored the first goal after receiving the ball from junior, Caroline Cordrey, making the corner a quick success.

Only three minutes later, Cordrey assisted another goal.  This time junior, and the only one to score during Saturdays game against Chatham, Katie Birle put the ball in the goal off of a beautiful shot.

"We played pretty well today. We communicated a lot more and were more focused on scoring. We are excited for this up coming season and we all hope we accomplish as much as we did last year," Birle said on Tuesday's game opposed to Friday's game against Watchung Hills.

Wapping up the first half, Cordrey, assisted by senior, Katie Stuke, scored the third goal.  The final goal of the half was the product of a perfectly executed corner.

The game location was not as much a factor Tuesday as it was when Summit played Watchung Hills last Friday on a grass field. The game would have been much faster on turf and the Summit girls would likely still have beaten Glen Ridge, if not scored more.

The second half of the game against Glen Ridge was quieter, only giving way to one goal. Summit sophomore, Nikki Sharkin swept the ball into the back of the net. She was assisted by Katie Birle.

Throughout the duration of the game, defense never let their guard down.  Glen Ridge was only able to get three shots on goal, two of which were deflected by Grace Berkery and the third deflected by Maggie Evans, both Summit goalies.  Summit had its second shut out of the season and hopefully more to come.

The Hilltopper's home-opener is September 16 at 4 p.m. on the Upper High School turf. They will play Milburn. Summit did not play Milburn last year but the two teams being within such close proximity to each other should make for a compelling game.
