SUMMIT, NJ - A birthday celebration took a sharp turn on Sunday when the detached deck of a Tanglewood home collapsed with party-goers on it, leading to four injuries.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m. the Summit Fire Department responded to the report of a deck collapse with multiple injuries. Upon arrival, first responders found a 30-by-10 foot detached deck at the rear of the property had collapsed and injured four people, Summit Fire Chief Eric Evers told Patch.

The deck collapsed when guests had assembled on it for a party photo to commemorate an 85th birthday they were celebrating, officials said. The old wooden deck broke in the corner where everyone had assembled for the photo.

Evers noted the patients were transported by Summit and Millburn EMS to Overlook Medical Center for treatment while Summit Engine 2, Rescue 1, and Truck 1 assessed the stability of the deck, moved all victims away from the danger area.

They also assisted with treatment of the patients, according to Evers.

"A Signal 10 was transmitted for station coverage, and the Construction Official was requested to respond to evaluate the deck and concerns with a retaining wall," Evers said. "The area was secured with scene tape and the home owner was advised to keep away from the area."

The party continued after the scene was secured and guests said they will take the picture again, but not on the deck.

Last weekend also saw multiple decks collapse in Wildwood, with more significant injuries.
