Girls Tennis Has New Coach at the Helm

Hilltoppers lost their 2010 opener to Oak Knoll Wednesday, 3-2.

The Summit Girls Tennis program has a new leader on the courts this season.

Vincent Turturiello, who previously coached in the Berkeley Heights PAL program for the past 16 years, takes over for Brian Erickson, who led the Hilltoppers to a 12-5 record last season, winning five of its last six matches in the regular season.

Last year in the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 2 quarterfinals, Summit dropped a 4-1 decision to Governor Livingston on Oct. 8 with freshman Tasha Kewalramani recording the lone victory.

Last season, Kewalramani and fellow freshman teammate Heather Pearson, both had stellar inaugural seasons, each recording a 15-5 individual record at second and third singles respectively. Kewalramani, who has moved to first singles this season, has won nine of her last 10 matches and Pearson, who has moved to second singles this season, saw her six-match win streak snapped Tuesday in the opener vs. Oak Knoll, losing to Kelly McManus, 6-3, 2-6, 2-6.

"The girls have been working really hard, some days even double sessions," Turturiello said. "They have really improved from the beginning of the season and a special thanks goes out to the parents who provide the support, motivation and enthusiasm that makes Summit a special place to coach."

Summit 2010 Girls Tennis Lineup: 1st singles - Tasha Kewalramani (sophomore); 2nd singles - Heather Pearson (sophomore); 3rd singles - Nina Verghis (senior); 1st doubles - Emma Radest (junior) & Julia Shaffer (junior); 2nd doubles - Lisa Carlson (junior) & Amanda Wilson (senior); 3rd doubles - Daniela Rodriguez (senior) and Sarah Trousdale (junior).
