Irish Folk Singer Kicks-Off Coffee House Sunday Nights
Brian Kennedy was the first of four to perform in August

The first of four Coffee House Sunday Nights was held Aug. 6 at the Summit Family Aquatic Center. But there will be plenty of additional opportunities to grab a free cup of coffee and sit down to enjoy the music.
"It's a great opportunity to open the gates to people in the community that are not members," Community Center Customer Service Manager Gretchen Masterfano said. "It also gives us a chance to provide entertainment to people who have been coming here all summer."
Irish folk singer Brian Kennedy was the performer under the spotlight Aug. 6, mixing in fast-paced Irish folk music with slowed-down instrumentals.

"Folk music is a love of mine," Kennedy said. "For years I've been playing St. Patrick's Day parties, which is what I usually do."
As Kennedy played the crowd grew from about 10 people to 20 or 25 at times, the music drawing them in.

"I love music, especially Irish folk," patron Terry Pierson said. "I've been to some Coffee House events in the past, and plan on attending the ones this year. It is usually a good time and a great social event to attend."
Fellow attendee Christa Plantener agreed, saying she has spread word about the event to others in her neighborhood.
"I would definitely recommend it," Plantener said. "I talked to my neighbors and gave them the information regarding the event."
Pierson and Plantener were just two of about two-dozen people lightly clapping after every song before giving a good ovation as Kennedy finished.
"The people seem to really love it," Masterfano said. "It is the same people who attend year after year, and they always have a great time."
Kennedy started by clearing things up for anyone who didn't understand what type of music was going to be played.
"You won't be hearing any rap or hip-hop," he said. "It is just some good older music that will usually attract older folks, although some kids like it, too."
