Johnny Scioscia Sets SHS Career Scoring Record

Lacrosse star tallies 231 points in three years at the varsity level.

There's no doubt that Summit boys lacrosse captain, Johnny Scioscia, can play. On Saturday afternoon in the Tournament of Champions final, the senior set Summit High School's boys lacrosse career scoring record with 231 career points.

Former Hilltopper Matt Starker previously held the record with 230 career points during the 2000-2002 seasons.

Ironically, Scioscia's record-setting point came in his final game as a Hilltopper, when he assisted Sonny Round for Summit's opening goal in the TOC final. The Hilltoppers went on to win the game and claim their second consecutive TOC crown by defeating Saint Joseph, Metuchen, 6-1.

"The record has been in the back of my mind the whole year," Scioscia said.  "I knew it would be nice to achieve, but repeating as TOC champs is so much sweeter. Setting that record–I'm proud to be that guy–but at the same time, I couldn't have done it without my team. We always play together and take pride in our unselfishness. I owe it all to my teammates."

Ever since Scioscia stepped on the field as a Summit varsity lacrosse player, he has made an impact. He stood out with 74 points in his sophomore season. As a junior, he continued to improve, tallying 86 points and a TOC trophy. This season, as a senior, Scioscia led the Hilltoppers with 71 points (26 goals, 45 assists) and earned a second TOC title.

"Johnny's a great player," Summit head coach Jim Davidson said. "He's done an outstanding job for us the last three years. For him to leave here with two titles is incredible. I'm proud of him and all of the kids for their efforts. It was a great team effort all season."

Last month, Scioscia was one of eight Summit High School seniors to be awarded the $1,000 Howard S. Anderson scholarship. Scioscia will continue his studies and lacrosse career next year at Notre Dame.
